More and more patients who attend medical consultations for “small penis” and want penile enlargement and/or thickening surgeries, most of them do not need it, because they have a penis in the normal range. The cause of this request is “the lack of sexual education, counseling, cultural prejudices of men and women, which give “an exaggerated prominence to the size of their penis.”
A few years ago, our journalist friend and Master in Sexuality, Mileyda Menéndez Dávila, wrote an interesting article on this topic, for the Sexo Sentido section of the newspaper Juventud Rebelde. “The best scalpel is self-esteem” (https://bit.ly/2JJCGTM) we recommend it as an excellent proposal to clarify and learn about the topic, so we decided to revitalize some concepts, discussed in that article, since they continue There are men concerned about the size of their “virile member”.
The vast majority of men who dream of penis enlargement surgery are young, with a lack of adequate sexual education. Then life shows them that they lacked more experience than size, and above all, they lacked self-confidence and good judgment when choosing a partner.
We attribute this anguish to inadequate sexual education in both sexes; it is surprising to see the prejudices that this issue still generates and the way in which opinions contradict each other: a 19-year-old young man believes that a very large penis causes a “cerebral infarction”; Some see size as synonymous with virility and others assume that this is a problem created by women.
In Cuba, as throughout the world, there is a growing demand for surgeries to enlarge the penis, but in practice these are scarce. Fortunately, when its few advantages and many disadvantages are explained to them, most men are convinced that it is not necessary to operate but rather to “learn to operate” with the penis and the rest of the body until sexual performance is perfected. Sexuality is very broad, and the penis is just one part to which too much importance is given.
Surgical intervention is not a procedure to be taken lightly, but rather an option for well-selected cases. The real contribution of surgery is at most one or two more centimeters. On the other hand, there may be consequences on the functioning or aesthetics of the penis, although the worst consequences are vascular and nerve damage, which affects the erection.
«All people should know that women have many areas that participate in eroticism. The greatest sensitivity is found in the “clitoral hood” and at the entrance to the vagina, mainly on the anterior surface of its external third, where the roots of the corpora cavernosa of the clitoris end (coinciding with the controversial and world-famous G-spot). Therefore, the penis does not need to be too long to stimulate that area during penetrative intercourse.
The average penis in erection or maximum elongation of the pubis to the middle part of the glans in our country ranges between 11 – 15 centimeters, but men with smaller penises can perfectly achieve a good erection, adequately stimulate their partner and provoke their arousal, lubrication, and orgasm.
However, our work team has treated patients who want to “grow their penis so as not to lose their relationship,” and when measuring them it turns out that they are within or above that average. I remember one case, who was 18 centimeters and still wanted to have surgery because his partner “saw him as small.” In such cases, the most logical thing would be to look for the causes of dissatisfaction in other aspects of the couple.
Medicine must be cautious in the face of this problem and treat this problem in Multidisciplinary Groups of Urologists-Andrologists and Sexologists with a Specialty in Mental Health. The position of the International Society of Sexual Medicine (ISSM) and the Latin American Society of Sexual Medicine (SLAMS) is “not to perform penile lengthening in patients who do not need it.”
