México. The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, on Monday congratulated the new US president, Donald Trump, and affirmed that dialogue, respect and cooperation will always be the symbol for the bilateral relationship.

“On behalf of the Government of Mexico, I congratulate Donald Trump @POTUS for his inauguration as the 47th president of the United States of America,” Sheinbaum said in a message published on her account on the social network X.

“As neighbors and trade partners, dialogue, respect and cooperation will always be the symbol of our relationship,” she added.

During her usual press conference, Sheinbaum asserted that the relationship with the United States will be one of equals and always in defense of the Mexicans living in that nation.

“Mexicans are very important to the United States economy and the Trump administration is well aware of it,” the Mexican president insisted, assuring that her country is ready to deal with the eventual mass deportations announced by the new ruler.

According to Sheinbaum, in the event of expulsions, in addition to supporting those Mexicans in the United States with the consular network, legal support and other schemes, Mexico has devised a comprehensive program to receive them.

Trump – sworn in this Monday – also promised to raise tariffs on Mexican goods and others such as Canada, from the first day of his administration, in retaliation for illegal immigration and “crime and drugs,” he said.

“It is important to know that Mexico has been working on a strategy for all those migrants who want to reach the United States, it is a comprehensive, humanistic strategy that has led to a drop in the number of migrants reaching the Northern border,” said Sheinbaum.

Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente highlighted that the human mobility model implemented in his country has translated into a 78 percent decrease in illegal crossings.

According to data from the US Customs and Border Protection Office, by December 18, 2023, 12,498 cases of irregular immigrants had been on recorded, the highest in history, while on January 18 of this year the total number dropped to 2,803.

Sheinbaum reiterated that, after Trump’s inauguration, “we will enter into communication, and we know that there will be an agreement on the different issues, that is our objective.”
