The US climate ambassador met a few days ago with López Obrador and addressed Mexico’s commitments prior to the talks of the COP27 of the United Nations

John Kerry, the U.S. climate chief, said Wednesday night that Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador will make a major announcement on the country’s climate commitments, a week before the United Nations COP27 talks.

“I was just in Mexico a few days ago and we will have an important announcement that President López Obrador has agreed to regarding what Mexico is going to undertake now,” Kerry said during a press conference before his trip to Egypt for the UN summit.

“That will be significant,” said the climate ambassador of the country with the world’s largest economy.

Kerry said the United States had urged nations around the world to increase the amount by which each country commits to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and expects new commitments to be announced “in the coming days.”

However, Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) has not responded so far.

Mexico, Latin America’s second-largest emitter, pledged last year to expand its climate change targets and reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, after being criticized for policies that the research coalition Climate Action Tracker says would increase emissions rather than reduce them.

Kerry met with AMLO in Sonora and asked him to increase efforts.

Last Friday, John Kerry called on Mexico to undertake additional efforts to reach commitments to curb climate change.

After a meeting with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in the city of Hermosillo, Sonora, Kerry said additional efforts must be undertaken to meet the commitments made last year at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow and the obligations of the Paris Climate Agreement.

The special envoy of the US government praised Mexico’s plans on climate change and said the country is making decisions that will benefit everyone.
