Central America is consolidating its position as a globally significant tourist destination. Data shows that the region attracted 26 million visitors, who generated an impressive economic impact of at least US$26 billion, according to the Agencia de Promoción Turística de Centroamérica (CATA). Given these results, the agency has intensified its efforts to promote the region as an attractive multi-destination.

To enhance this strategy, CATA has established close collaboration with various airlines to improve connectivity. It also works with approximately 60 tour operators in the region. The main goal is to create tourist routes that allow travelers to easily travel between several countries, taking advantage of the diverse regional offerings.

An example of this initiative is the creation of themed routes, such as a reef route or a Caribbean route, which combine the offerings of countries like Belize and Honduras. This approach allows tour operators to unify their offerings and offer more comprehensive experiences. The recent UN Tourism report ranked Central America 17th in the global visitor ranking, surpassing established destinations like Portugal and the Netherlands.

Of the total number of visitors, approximately 70% are overnight tourists, meaning they spend more than one night in the region. The remainder are cruise passengers and day-trippers visiting for a limited time. The majority of travelers, between 50% and 60%, come from the United States and Canada, while 24% are visitors traveling within Central America itself.

Central America’s diversity is a major draw for tourists. The region boasts four countries belonging to the Mayan world, as well as countless beaches and lush vegetation. Therefore, CATA is investing in training tourism sector stakeholders to adapt to new travel trends, focusing on sustainability and the use of artificial intelligence.

The goal of these efforts is to attract a greater number of visitors from key markets such as Europe, Asia, and South America. By modernizing and diversifying its offering, Central America seeks to consolidate its position as a top-tier tourist destination, capable of competing with the world’s major tourist hubs and ensuring sustained growth.
