Costa Rica continues to solidify its global reputation as a leader in tourism, exports, and sustainability, according to a recent study by Bloom Consulting for esencial COSTA RICA. The report, which analyzed over 12.4 million global searches, highlights the country’s impressive growth in digital engagement across key sectors, particularly tourism and exports.

Tourism Growth: A Magnet for Global Travelers

Tourism searches dominated the findings, accounting for 11 million inquiries. Costa Rica remains a top destination for travelers seeking eco-tourism, surfing, and luxury experiences. Visitors from the United States led search activity, contributing nearly 50% of total inquiries, followed by Canada and Germany.

Key tourism highlights include:

  • Sustainable Activities: Bird watching, hiking, and visits to national parks remain highly sought after.
  • Luxury Travel: Interest in Costa Rica’s boutique accommodations and upscale experiences continues to grow.
  • Adventure Sports: Surfing and eco-adventures position Costa Rica as a must-visit destination for thrill-seekers.

The surge in interest represents a 42% increase compared to pre-pandemic levels, signaling a strong recovery in international travel to Costa Rica.

Sustainability at the Core of Costa Rica’s Global Appeal

The study also underscores Costa Rica’s leadership in sustainability, aligning with its 2035 Strategy. The strategy emphasizes renewable energy, carbon-neutral initiatives, and sustainable products as key pillars of the country’s global identity.

“Costa Rica’s focus on clean technologies and eco-friendly practices resonates with global audiences, reinforcing its position as a leader in the fight against climate change,” said Adriana Acosta, Director of esencial COSTA RICA.

International searches frequently highlight Costa Rica’s commitment to:

  • Renewable energy projects.
  • Carbon-neutral tourism practices.
  • Sustainable export products such as coffee and cocoa.

Export Growth: Costa Rican Products in Demand

Exports experienced an 8% increase in global searches, further emphasizing Costa Rica’s competitiveness in international markets.

Top-performing products include:

  • Coffee: Searches increased by 16%, reflecting global demand for high-quality Costa Rican coffee.
  • Cocoa: A 20% rise in inquiries highlights growing interest in sustainably produced chocolate.
  • Flowers: Continued popularity in markets across Europe and North America.

This growth underscores Costa Rica’s ability to adapt to evolving global trade trends while maintaining its focus on quality and sustainability.

Investment Opportunities: A Rising Star

Searches related to investment in Costa Rica grew by 17%, driven by interest in areas such as:

  • Labor Costs: Competitive rates attracting international businesses.
  • Port Infrastructure: Strategic improvements enhancing global connectivity.
  • Clean Energy: Investments in renewable energy projects solidifying Costa Rica’s green economy.

These trends highlight the country’s appeal as an attractive destination for foreign investment, particularly in sustainable and technology-driven industries.

Digital Footprint: A Strategic Asset

Costa Rica’s strong digital presence has played a pivotal role in shaping its international image. According to the study, 83% of global searches are linked to content generated by official Costa Rican sources, ensuring that the country’s messaging aligns with its real-world offerings.

“By leveraging our digital footprint, we can better understand global perceptions and tailor strategies to connect with audiences seeking authentic and sustainable experiences,” said Acosta.

Post-Pandemic Recovery and Beyond

Costa Rica has not only rebounded but surpassed pre-pandemic levels of interest, particularly in tourism. The reactivation of key markets in the United States and Europe has driven this resurgence, showcasing the resilience and adaptability of Costa Rica’s tourism sector.

As part of its 2035 Strategy, the country aims to:

  • Further consolidate its position as a global leader in sustainability.
  • Continue attracting eco-conscious travelers, investors, and exporters.
  • Expand its digital footprint to reach new international audiences.

Future Outlook

With its robust digital identity, innovative content strategies, and steadfast commitment to sustainability, Costa Rica is poised for continued growth across tourism, exports, and investment. By aligning its global image with its core values, the country is creating new opportunities for economic development and enhanced well-being for its citizens.
