Mexico Receives More Than 17 Million International Tourists by Air from January To October 2023

The Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, Miguel Torruco Marqués, announced that, in the period from January to October 2023, the arrival of 17 million 664 thousand international tourists by air to our country according to their nationality was registered, which represents an increase of 6.2% compared to what was recorded in the same period of 2022.

The head of the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) stressed that, according to information from the Migration Policy-Registration and Identity of Persons Unit of the Ministry of the Interior (Segob), this figure also exceeds the arrivals registered during the January-October 2019 period, with 13.8%, when 15 million 517 thousand international tourists were registered.

He indicated that the main countries in international tourist arrivals by air to Mexico from January to October 2023, were the United States, Canada, and Colombia, with 13 million 460 thousand tourists; This is 7% more than in the first ten months of 2022, and also exceeding by 23.8% the 10 million 871 thousand tourists in January-October 2019.

Torruco Marqués pointed out that, in the first ten months of the year, the arrival of U.S. tourists by air reached 11 million 21 thousand tourists, exceeding by 3.4% what was recorded in January-October 2022, and increasing by 27.9% the arrivals of that period of 2019, when there were 8 million 616 thousand tourists.

He added that the arrival of Canadian tourists by air during the January-October 2023 period was one million 835 thousand tourists, this is 51.6% higher than one million 210 thousand tourists who arrived in the same period of 2022; and surpassing 3.8% those captured in the same period of 2019, which were one million 767 thousand tourists.

From January to October 2023, the arrival of Colombian tourists by air was 604 thousand 468 tourists, exceeding the 488 thousand 5 arrivals of the same period in 2019, that is, 23.9%, said the head of Sectur.

Of the rest of the nationalities, 4 million 204 thousand tourists were counted, this is an increase of 3.7% compared to January-October 2022, and representing a market share of 23.8%.

The Secretary of Tourism reported that, between January-October 2023, Cancun, Mexico City International Airport (AICM), and Los Cabos, were the airports that received the highest number of international tourists, with 13 million 541 thousand tourists, this is 4.4% more than in the first ten months of 2022; also exceeding with 12.4% the arrivals in the same period of 2019, when 12 million 46 thousand tourists arrived.

During January-October 2023, 8 million 157 thousand international tourists arrived at Cancun airport, an increase of 5% compared to the first ten months of 2022; 3 million 501 thousand tourists arrived at the AICM, 1.7% more than in the period January to October 2022; and the Los Cabos airport received one million 884 thousand international tourists, this is 7% more than what was observed during the same period of 2022.

Of the rest of the airports, between January and October 2023, the arrival of 4 million 122 thousand international tourists was registered, a level 12.4% higher than the arrivals of the same period in 2022.

The Secretary of Tourism highlighted the notable increase in tourism activity in Mexico, which in turn generates an economic spillover in local communities, thus fulfilling the mandate of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to make tourism a tool for social reconciliation.
