Northern Triangle of Central America Received US$11.36 Billion In Remittances

The Northern Triangle of Central America – El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala – totaled more than US$11.363 billion dollars in family remittances between January and April of this year, 7.8% more than in the same months of 2022, according to Information from the International Organization for Migration (OIM).

According to the EFE news agency, the IOM report indicates that only El Salvador received in this first four-month period of 2023 at least US$2.566 billion dollars, Guatemala US$5.98 billion, and Honduras US$2.811 billion.

The monthly income of remittances to these countries, which have millions of their citizens living in the United States, was US$2.65 billion dollars in January and US$2.64 billion in February, while in March and April the record was US$3.15 and US$2.90 billion, respectively.

IOM data indicates that this region of Central America reached US$34.46 billion dollars in remittances in all of 2022 and US$30.17 billion in 2021.

Only in El Salvador, government data indicates that a total of 471,633 households receive remittances, of which 13,530 are in extreme poverty and 68,874 in relative poverty. (EFE)
