The National Civil Police (PNC) and the Attorney General’s Office on Monday arrested 70 gang members of the Barrio 18 Mara, the prosecuting institution reported.
An operation was carried out in the area of San Diego, in the La Libertad department, on early Monday morning, and dismantled the gang.
According to reports, authorities are carrying out raids to arrest around 20,000 gang members who still operate in the country.
The Government estimates that about 56,000 have already been arrested.
The reports noted that those arrested are part of the Barrio 18 structure, one of the groups that the Government has described as terrorist, and according to authorities 125 cases, including two murders and 22 cases of extortion, among others, attributed to the Tynis Locos Sureños cell, have been solved.
On the other hand, the PNC reported the capture of a murderer in the municipality of Zacatecoluca, in the department of La Paz, and the arrest of a gang member who had been prosecuted on more than 20 occasions and was released.
