NBC News says Cuba’s development of five anti-COVID-19 immunogens is good news for people in developing countries waiting to be immunized against the current pandemic.
The US media outlet explained in a report the reasons that led Cuba to be on the list of the best-vaccinated nations in the world, ahead even of developed countries in Europe and North America.
“Ninety-three percent of the entire citizenry has at least one dose of any of its anti-COVID-19 vaccines (Soberana 02, Soberana Plus and Abdala), while this was the first nation to be ready to protect the children population over the age of two,” NBC News acknowledged.
The director of the Finlay Vaccine Institute (IFV), Vicente Vérez Bencomo, where two of the three injectables approved so far in the country were developed, explained that Cuba was the only nation in the world capable of facing the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19, with practically all its children vaccinated.
The scientist assured that after the campaign that ended in November last year, there were zero infant deaths compared to the toll left by the Delta wave, which caused 80 deaths.
Vérez Bencomo also said that they are working towards recognizing national products by the World Health Organization but clarified how these processes could be cumbersome and delayed.
The news channel also illustrated how Cuba, under the guidance of the historical leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro, invested in biotechnology in the 1990s, was concerned about public health infrastructure, and implemented a National Immunization Program, thanks to which many diseases were eliminated.
