The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) expressed its concern over the political stagnation in Haiti, the humanitarian crisis and the growing insecurity there, according to a communiqué published today in CARICOM Today.

This context was analyzed at the recent meeting of the heads of government of the bloc in Belize, where Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry mentioned the collapse of institutions and stressed the need to restore democracy, according to the document.

At the conclave, Henry spoke of the importance of re-establishing the constitutional framework in his nation through elections to address insecurity and lay the foundations for future development.

For their part, the Heads of Government requested clear instructions from the Haitian Government regarding the assistance required and, in this regard, agreed to establish a CARICOM Team to interact with their Haitian counterparts and the international community, according to the communiqué.

They also expressed their concern over the prolongation of the political impasse in that country, the growing insecurity and its repercussions for the region.

The leaders welcomed Henry’s suggestion that CARICOM could help facilitate talks and elections, address insecurity and police training, and contribute to the investigation into the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse, according to the communiqué.

They also stressed the importance of ensuring good governance and respect for the rule of law and human rights in Haiti, as set out in the CARICOM Civil Society Charter.

The high-level CARICOM meeting was held on March 1 and 2 in the Belizean town of San Pedro, where they discussed economic recovery, the current political situation in Haiti and other issues of regional importance.
