The Democratic and Popular Sector, one of the most actively opposing platforms to the current Haitian Government, announced a tour of the country to mobilize the population against the constitutional referendum.
From May 23 to 30, members of this Sector will tour the departmental cities, spokesman Andre Michel confirmed.
The Sector pursues two objectives: to defeat the referendum, which is expressly prohibited in the current Constitution, and to demand respect for article 134-2 of the Constitution, which establishes the reduction of the presidential term if there are problems with vote recount.
For this organization, as well as a large number of social groups, unions, among others, Jovenel Moise’s mandate expired on February 7, which is why he lacks legitimacy to hold a referendum or the elections slated for September.
Michel announced that a massive protest will take place on June 12 in Arcahie, known as the city of independence, and encouraged civil society structures to join the opponents in rejecting the referendum.
On Tuesday, within the framework of the 218th anniversary of the creation of the national flag, Moïse defended the vote for a new Constitution to achieve the country’s stability.
The president reiterated that the new Constitution will allow the State to reach the communal sectors, and is an opportunity for young people and the diaspora to have easier access to national politics. (PL)
