Experts from the United Nations Human Rights Council demanded on Friday that the Government of the United States end the blockade against Cuba and exclude the Caribbean Island from the States Sponsors of Terrorism (SSOT) list.
A press release from Cuba’s Permanent Mission in the UN noted that several special procedures mandate holders of the UN Human Rights Council issued the communication and denounced the serious effects that this decision causes on the human rights of the Cuban people.
It also affects the country’s commercial and financial relations, and national efforts to respond to the negative effects accumulated by the blockade, the COVID-19 pandemic and natural disasters, the text underscored.
UN experts described the decision by the Donald Trump administration as an act of unilateral coercion, incompatible with the United Nations Charter and international law and in violation of UN resolutions on the illegality of unilateral coercive measures and on the need to end the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the Government of the United States on Cuba.
They stressed that the accumulated damages caused by the US blockade amount to more than 164 billion dollars and have a worrying impact on the country’s food security, inflation, increased food prices, decreased agricultural production and restrictions on the import of agricultural machinery, spare parts, fertilizers and other inputs.
The joint communication recalled previous texts on the subject sent to the Government of the United States, which have not been answered, and called on the US Government to comply with its international obligations regarding human rights.
The signatories also demand that Cuba be removed from the State Sponsors of Terrorism list and that all unilateral coercive measures against the country be ended, including the economic, commercial and financial blockade. (PL)
