The Director of the General Directorate of Passports, Digna Reynoso, announced on Tuesday that the country is working towards issuing its first electronic passport in February 2025. The new passport modality requires an investment of approximately 6 billion Dominican pesos, or around $6,000 million.

Reynoso explained that the project is being carried out in partnership with OASIS, which is responsible for implementing the process through Law 340. The director emphasized that the price of the passport will remain unchanged, with a cost of less than 20 dollars.

The issuance of the electronic passport is expected to bring about a significant overhaul of the country’s infrastructure, both technologically and in terms of process. The new booklet will represent a major upgrade in security and convenience for travelers.

With this new development, the Dominican Republic is poised to join the ranks of countries that have already adopted electronic passports, bringing its travel documentation in line with international standards.
