Dominican Republic will have from today a new Constitution that limits presidential reelection to a single second consecutive term and prohibits a third one, with the purpose that no ruler perpetuates himself in power.
Before the elections last May, when President Luis Abinader was elected for a second governmental term until 2028, he reiterated time and again his determination to modify the constitutional text.
He always made it clear that his main objective was to put a “padlock” on it in order to prevent its modification for his own benefit, as did dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo (1891-1961)
Abinaner presented his project and obtained the approval of the clause which establishes that no modification to the Constitution may deal with the standard form of government which must always be civil, republican, democratic and representative.
The document enacts that the president elected on the third Sunday of May 2024 (Luis Abinader) will never again be able to run for the same position or for the vice presidency of the Republic. The ruler will lead this Sunday the act of proclamation of the Constitution, which will take place at 10:00, local time, at the National Congress, and will be broadcasted live on television and on social networks.
