The Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) on Friday condemned recent signs of hostility by United States border and customs authorities that add to the obstacles that prevent understanding between the two nations at present.

On its Facebook profile, the UNEAC referred to what happened on May 3, when several members of a delegation of more than 150 young people who had visited Cuba since April 24 were detained and held for several hours upon their return to the United States.

The Cuban cultural institution pointed out that the said event “is a sign of intolerance and hostility against everything that favors coexistence and understanding between both nations.”

The UNEAC secretariat also backed up the denunciation of such acts made by The People’ Forum, the organization promoting the solidarity visit, on its Facebook account.

It also ratified the “will to continue to build bridges between the cultures and peoples of the United States and Cuba.”

When the events occurred, The People’s Forum tweeted that “despite having travelled legally, we’ve been harassed and held in Secondary Questioning on arrival to airports” in Miami and New York by the US Customs and Borders Patrol.

The organization stressed, “This outrageous behavior seeks to intimidate us and criminalize our right to travel and exchange.” (PL)
