Proposals related to cooperation in health care, human resources training, medical assistance, and the use of biopharmaceuticals were presented at the 8th Cuba-Caricom Summit, the Cuban Foreign Ministry published on Twitter on Wednesday.
It also acknowledged the promotion of three joint regional collaboration projects associated with the mitigation of the effects of climate change and disaster risk reduction.
The Foreign Ministry also noted Cuba’s warm welcome of the Caribbean Community’s initiatives linked to joint food production and trade promotion, as strategies to foster the development of the region’s nations.
In his speech at the meeting, held on Tuesday in Barbados, President Miguel Diaz-Canel expressed concern about the increase, in recent years, of the impact of climate change and natural disasters, especially in the small island states of the Caribbean.
The Cuban leader referred to the intensification of meteorological phenomena such as drought, hurricanes, soil deterioration, and rising temperatures and mentioned the growing exchange of scientists and agencies in the region.
These meetings, he said, contribute to progress in the states’ preparation to mitigate the risks of natural phenomena, and reiterated the need to promote actions to preserve the region’s ecological system.
