The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported an increasing record in coronavirus cases worldwide on Sunday, with a total of 230,370 recorded in the past 24 hours.
The United States, Brazil, India and South Africa have reported the largest increases in the number of new contagions, according to a daily report by the agency. WHO’s previous record for new cases was 228,102 on July 10. The death toll remained constant, at around 5,000 per day.
According to data from Johns Hopkins University, covid-19 cases across the globe are approaching 13 million, marking another milestone in the spread of the disease, which has killed more than 566,000 people since the start of the pandemic.
The U.S. also recorded a new daily anti-record: on Saturday the country reported 71,389 new cases of coronavirus in a single day, the highest number since the outbreak began.
Covid-19 outbreak is accelerating
On Friday, WHO Executive Director for Health Emergencies Mike Ryan said it is unlikely that the new coronavirus can be eradicated or eliminated. The official stressed the importance of extinguishing the infection points. In this way, the world could “potentially avoid the worst of having second spikes” of contagion and be forced to take up confinement measures and blockages.
Just this week, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the covid-19 outbreak is accelerating and the pandemic has not yet been reached.
Almost in the same vein was the director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Anthony Fauci, saying that we are just at the “initial stage” of the global coronavirus pandemic and that it will “probably get worse before it gets better.”
