The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) warned here the eve that the Covid-19 pandemic will bring about a growth in hunger and poverty in countries of the Community of Latin American States and Caribeños (CELAC).

The agency delivered its new report to Mexico as CELAC’s pro tempore president, because the latter had commissioned FAO to carry out this study.

FAO accompanies the report with a series of recommendations to fight against the crisis caused by the pandemic in terms of food security and poverty in Latin America and the Caribbean.

‘It is key for governments to declare food and agriculture as strategic activities of national public interest, with the support of all organs of the State and of the population,’ suggests the FAO.

The entity adds that it is essential to keep the food system alive so that the health crisis does not turn into a food crisis.

The report was delivered by Julio Berdegue, regional delegate of the organization, to Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs Marcelo Ebrard.

He said that the problems that afflict the region and, in particular, this health emergency, do not know borders and therefore they must be confronted together. Ebrard replied that no country in Latin America and the Caribbean is alone in the fight against Covid-19 disease for the simple fact that these countries are part of CELAC.
