Voting Open for Primaries in The Dominican Republic

The authorities of the Dominican Republic reported today the opening of seven thousand 372 polling stations, for the simultaneous primary elections where candidates for elective positions for the 2020 elections.

In these polls, the participants will vote for the candidates of the Dominican Liberation (PLD) and Modern Revolutionary (PRM) parties, the two main Dominican political forces.

The presidential candidate of the Dominican Liberation Party, Gonzalo Castillo, today cast his vote and said

‘We are in the presence of a reliable voting system, the process takes a short time, now we must, whatever the results of the vote, abide by the results and everything is in God’s hands’, the pre-candidate told the press.

Nearly 7.4 million Dominicans authorized in the Board’s register may vote. In the case of the PLD official, all those registered will do so, since they are open primaries, however, the PRM, when choosing the modality of the closed register, will only have 1.2 million possible voters.

The PLD registered six thousand 713 candidates, including 490 for mayors, three thousand 80 councilors, 646 directors, thousand 782 members, four to the Presidency, 97 senators and 613 for deputies.

For its part, the PRM presented a list of four thousand 601 candidates: 257 for mayors, two thousand 337 for councilor, 387 for directors, one thousand 365 for members, six for the Presidency, 236 for deputies and 13 for senators.

Likewise, around 500 observers from national and international organizations participate in the primaries, among them the Civic Participation Civic Movement, the Inter-American Union of Electoral Bodies and the Permanent Conference of Political Parties of Latin America.

Prensa Latina, on a tour of some polling stations in this capital, could see that everything goes smoothly and the ranks flow properly while law enforcement maintains control in these places.

The president of the Central Electoral Board (JCE), Julio César Castaños, spoke at the beginning of the process and asked for peace and calm in the country. He warned that since last night you cannot proselytize and reminded voters that schools cannot enter with weapons, alcoholic beverages, or cameras.
