Mexico’s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador announced Friday the opening of the national police files in charge of espionage in the past and of the now defunct Center for Investigation and National Security (CISEN).
The President, in his morning press conference at the National Palace said that all the files kept and protected in the CISEN are released for public consideration so that citizens, especially investigators, have access to them.
He said the decision is part of the strengthening of the historical memory program.
All this is completely open, in general transparency, only with the limitations established by the law with protection for children and families and what is related to human rights, the President said.
He reiterated that all historical documents related to human rights violations, persecution linked to political and social movements, and acts of corruption, which are in the hands of decentralized administrative bodies, will be transferred to the General Archive of the Nation.
They will be made public in no more than 180 days and people can attend to examine them.
The decision has already been published in the Official Journal of the Federation after the Mexican government requested the opening of such files.
It was recalled that last December the General Archive of the Nation could not access a section watched by CISEN, under the argument that they were reserved political files.
The published agreement establishes that the offices, including their decentralized administrative bodies and entities of the Federal Public Administration must transfer to the General Archive the totality of those documents in the form and terms established by the respective regulations and everyone will have access to them.
