UN Project Favors Coral Reefs in Cuba
Restorative actions of coral reefs, as part of the UN’s Ecovalor international project, favors that ecosystem on the north coast of the western Cuban province of Matanzas.
The coral reef in question is called Playa el Coral, considered as an ideal site for diving and located between this territory and world-known Varadero Resort.
Ecovalor project brings together six strategic sectors in managing biodiversity and sustainable management plans in Matanzas, in addition to promoting manifold environmental benefits, as reported by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA).
Eilen Domínguez, technical chief of Flora and Fauna Department, stressed that ‘coral planting is a novel experience for our ministry, and we currently have nurseries with two endangered species: Acropora palmata and Cervicornis.’ (PL)
