Prominent diplomat Ronald Sanders, from Antigua and Barbuda, on Friday praised Cuba’s progress in the production of Covid-19 vaccines despite the impact of the United States blockade against that country.

Sanders, who is the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the United States and the Organization of American States (OAS), assured that the members of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) could benefit from the Cuban vaccines.

In a text posted on Caribbean News Global, Sanders reproduced some remarks by Cuban scientists about the progress being made regarding the Soberana 02 vaccine, despite the obstacles arising from the US blockade to purchase equipment and raw materials.

After he mentioned other vaccines produced by Cuba, the academic noted that this Covid-19 vaccine would help break the global control of the market by large pharmaceutical companies in United States and Europe.

He also denounced the refusal by the companies Pfizer and Moderna to facilitate exports, and ruled that ‘human rights, including the right to life and health, have been ignored.’

The ambassador recalled President Biden’s commitment during his electoral campaign to reverse the punishments imposed on Cuba by his predecessor, Donald Trump, like its inclusion in a list of countries that sponsor terrorism, ‘one of the most unfounded measures’ against the island. (PL)
