Los Cabos has long been one of North America’s favorite vacation spots, but accessing the stunning tip of the Baja Peninsula has always been a challenge for travelers from further south. That is about to change in a historic way.

In a landmark announcement for the region’s connectivity, Copa Airlines has revealed it will launch the first-ever direct, nonstop flight between Panama City, Panama, and Los Cabos, starting this winter. This new route represents a major milestone in the destination’s global expansion, creating a seamless bridge between Los Cabos and all of Central and South America for the first time.

Here at The Cabo Sun, we’re breaking down what this new flight means for the future of tourism in Baja California Sur.

What This New Connection Means for Los Cabos

This new route is more than just another flight path; it’s a strategic economic gateway. According to Maribel Collins, the head of Baja California Sur’s Ministry of Tourism and Economy (SETUE), the connection is a game-changer. “This will generate an annual flow of more than 25,000 tourists from Central and South America,” she stated, highlighting the immense potential.

For travelers, the benefits are immediate. Previously, a tourist flying from a major South American city like Bogotá, Colombia, or São Paulo, Brazil, would face a long, often multi-stop journey through the United States to reach Los Cabos. With this new route, they can now make a single, easy connection through Panama’s efficient hub. This opens up Los Cabos to a massive new market of discerning travelers who can now access the destination with ease, bringing with them new opportunities for tourism, trade, and investment.

Copa Airlines on Strengthening the “Hub of the Americas”

From the airline’s perspective, this new route is a major strategic move. Copa Airlines has spent years building its home base in Panama City into the “Hub of the Americas,” the single most important connection point linking North, Central, and South America.

Pedro Heilbron, the CEO of Copa Airlines, emphasized that adding Los Cabos to their network strengthens this continental connectivity. Every new destination added makes the hub more powerful, allowing the airline to offer more convenient itineraries than any competitor. By choosing Los Cabos, Copa is acknowledging the destination’s status as a premier, high-demand location and betting that thousands of travelers from across Latin America are eager to visit.

The Flight Details: Who, What, and When

For those looking to book this historic flight, the details are clear and tickets are expected to go on sale soon.

Airline: Copa Airlines

Route: Panama City (PTY) to Los Cabos International Airport (SJD)

Launch Date: The inaugural flight is scheduled for December 4, 2025.

Schedule: The route will operate three times per week on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

Aircraft: The flights will utilize modern Boeing 737 MAX 8 and 737-800 aircraft, each with a capacity for 166 passengers.

This addition is a significant indicator of the destination’s growth, bringing the total number of international connections at Los Cabos International Airport to 39, served by 17 different airlines. It’s a clear sign that Los Cabos is no longer just a favorite spot for North Americans, but a truly global player in luxury travel.
