Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador today inaugurated the important section of the Cancun-Playa del Carmen Maya Train, two tourist centers of great importance for the country’s economy.
The morning conference was held at the Cancun Airport station of the Maya Train, located on the Chichen Itza-Tulum highway in Quintana Roo.
This is the second part of yesterday’s press conference when he inaugurated the impressive Chichen Itza museum.
Today the President apologized for the Cancun area, which is visited by 20 million Mexicans every year, not counting foreigners.
He acknowledged that Cancun was a shelter that gave protection, work, and welfare to many people in the country when the darkness of the neoliberal model buried the entire southeast in an economic stagnation that kept it in decline for three decades.
Many people from the five southern states came to Cancun to work, Yucatecans, people from Campeche, even people from the capital, and Here they found support, solidarity, work, and welfare and they stayed to live in Cancun, in Quintana Roo.
He said that this is why the tourist zone is already overcrowded, and the workers must do their best to get to their workplace and return to their homes, that is why infrastructure works were prioritized, including large bridges without the rule that governed before to pay tolls so that the people, and not the concessionaires, would pay for the work. The Mayan Train, he said, has the facility to solve all these problems of personnel transportation, although the main reason is to make the natives’ culture known in deep Mexico and to unite all the Mayan zones of the Mexican southeast.
Another reason, he explained, is that the millions of people from all over the world who come to visit and enjoy this paradise have their airport in Tulum, in addition to the one in Cancun which receives 350 flights every day, and now with the train they can enter and get to know the wonders of this area and its confines.
He said that more and more tourists are arriving and now with the train, it is not only to enjoy the beautiful beaches of the Caribbean but also to get to know the Mayan world, the second natural reserve in Latin America after the Amazon.
The Maya Train is the most important work of its kind in the world because it is not just a small project, it covers 1,554 km of railroad tracks and more than 800 of it are electrified, with double tracks, hundreds of bridges, modern trains built in the country, and all this, and much more, makes it a very emblematic work.
