In an era of increasing digitalization, Caribbean islands are modernizing their immigration processes by transitioning from paper forms to online systems, aiming to improve the traveler experience and streamline border control. Most recently, Dominica launched its digital immigration platform on Oct. 18, enabling visitors to complete their landing and departure forms online, thus eliminating the need for traditional paperwork.

The move to a fully digital system represents a broader trend across the Caribbean, as islands recognize the importance of easing entry requirements for tourists while also embracing sustainability and efficiency. In recent years, several destinations have either adopted or are in the process of adopting online immigration forms. This shift marks a significant leap forward for the region, which relies heavily on tourism as a key economic driver.

Long known as the “Nature Isle of the Caribbean” for its lush rainforests, volcanic landscapes, and waterfalls, Dominica is a hidden gem among travelers. Now, with its digital immigration system, the island is also positioning itself as a modern, tourist-friendly destination. Visitors now can complete and submit their immigration forms online before arrival, expediting their entry process at the airport.

Travelers can complete and submit the online ED card form at any time before their travel date. After submitting the form, travelers will receive an email confirmation along with a QR code. The information should be saved on a mobile device or printed for presentation at entry. Upon arrival, travelers must present their confirmation and QR code, along with their passport, to Immigration and Customs officials.

Many islands have gone digital

Dominica is not alone in this transition. Several other Caribbean islands have already made significant strides in digitizing their immigration processes. Aruba, Barbados, Bermuda, Curacao, St. Lucia, St. Kitts, Jamaica, the Bahamas, St. Maarten, Tortola and the Dominican Republic are among the destinations that have introduced digital platforms for landing and departure forms.

Aruba, for instance, was one of the early adopters of the online system, launching its ED (Embarkation/Disembarkation) card platform in 2015. This move enabled travelers to preregister their immigration details, making the arrival process quicker and more efficient. Barbados and St. Lucia followed suit with similar platforms, providing digital entry forms that have helped smooth the flow of visitors at their airports. These islands have recognized the value of making the travel experience hassle-free for tourists, especially at a time when health, safety, and convenience are top concerns for travelers.

While many islands have successfully implemented digital systems, others are actively exploring the transition. Trinidad and Tobago is reportedly working on its own version of an online immigration platform. According to the 2025 budget review, the government of Trinidad and Tobago has approved the implementation of a digital embarkation and disembarkation card, though no rollout date was given.

For travelers, the shift to digital immigration forms offers a range of benefits. One of the most obvious advantages: Travelers can complete and submit their forms before they even board their flights, significantly reducing the time spent in airport lines. This is particularly helpful for families or large groups, as each individual form can be completed at leisure, rather than hurriedly in a crowded arrivals hall.

From a governmental perspective, digital systems offer more accurate data collection and enhanced security. Customs and immigration officials can access visitor information in real-time, enabling them to better manage the flow of travelers and monitor border security more effectively. Additionally, the reduction in paper forms helps cut down on waste, contributing to the sustainability goals many Caribbean nations have embraced.
