The Lake Atitlán area in Guatemala is famous throughout Central America for its sheer natural beauty. In recent years, a number of boutique hotels have opened up around the lake for the more discerning and individual travel. In this article, writer Amanda Winstead lists her favorite Lake Atitlán hotels.

Guatemala is on many people’s travel bucket lists, and Lake Atitlán is often right at the top. Famously described by the 18th century explorer Alexander von Humboldt as the most beautiful lake in the world, visitors will find this lake in the Guatemalan highlands surrounded by volcanoes and indigenous Mayan communities. Atitlán is, in short, unforgettable. With its pure natural beauty, indigenous culture, and wide range of activities, Lake Atitlán has something for everyone.

But where to stay? Gone are the days where the only accommodations you’d find around Lake Atlitán were budget hostels filled with backpackers. Nowadays, the villages around Lake Atitlán are home to some of Guatemala’s most unique boutique hotels. Below, we list some of our favorite.

1. Casa Palopó

Casa Palopó is a boutique hotel in Santa Catarina Palopó with breathtaking lake and volcano views. Each room is uniquely decorated with traditional Guatemalan art and textiles. The hotel also has an infinity pool and offers activities such as cooking classes and boat tours.

2. Hotel Atitlán

Located in Panajachel, the largest town on the lake, Hotel Atitlán is a historic landmark that was once a family-owned coffee plantation. This hotel has 66 spacious rooms, scenic gardens, a pool, and private lakefront access.

3. Casa del Mundo

Only accessible by boat or on foot, you’ll find Casa del Mundo near the community of Santa Cruz La Laguna. The rooms also offer dramatic lake views to enjoy when not busy kayaking, hiking, stand-up paddling, and exploring. The call this place “Guatemala’s most magical hotel” and when you’re here, you’ll see why.

4. La Fortuna at Lake Atitlán

Also close to Santa Cruz La Laguna is La Fortuna at Lake Atitlán. This eco-friendly, off-grid hotel uses solar energy to power the entire property. Guests can choose from five private bungalows with gorgeous gardens and incredible water scenery. La Fortuna also offers free use of kayaks, paddle boards, and a heated lakefront hot tub to soothe aching muscles.

5. Laguna Lodge

Laguna Lodge is another hotel in Santa Cruz La Laguna. Close to a nature reserve, it offers guests the opportunity to explore the lush local greenery and spot native wildlife. The restaurant here is notable, with a menu comprising unique and regional cuisines. Perfect for eco-tourists and nature lovers, Laguna Lodge offers bird watching, horseback riding, and kayaking.

6. Hotel Isla Verde

Located in San Pedro la Laguna, Isla Verde is an eco-chic boutique hotel with a relaxed atmosphere. Guests can choose between garden suites, hill suites, or cozy cabins. The hotel has a restaurant serving delicious meals and is the perfect spot for a yoga retreat.

7. La Posada de Don Rodrigo

La Posada de Don Rodrigo is the perfect option if you want a more traditional and authentic stay. This family-run hotel in Panajachel has 39 comfortable rooms with water views. Guests can enjoy delicious local cuisine and the in-house spa service at this hotel.

8. Sababa Resort

This beachfront resort on a private sandy beach in San Pedro La Laguna. Sababa Resort offers modern guests’ rooms, suites, and villas, some with private balconies to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. It also has a restaurant and offers water sports, cultural tours, and other activities.

9. Hotel & Restaurant Arca de Noe

The name of this cozy hotel in Santa Cruz La Laguna translates to “Noah’s Ark“, and, like the biblical boat, promises a safe and comfortable stay. Arca de Noe gives guests a traditional Guatemalan experience with its colorful rooms, local cuisine, and panoramic views. This place is a must-visit for anyone looking for an authentic stay.

10. Tzampoc Resort

Zen and relaxation await you at Tzampoc Resort, nestled between the lake and the mountains in Santa Catarina Palopó. Guests have easy access to nearby towns, hiking trails, and water activities. Tzampoc also offers rejuvenating hydro-massage hot tubs, a pool, and hammocks that will make you never want to leave.

That wraps things up for our favorite Lake Atitlán hotels

Whether you’re traveling to Lake Atitlán for the outstanding natural beauty, the indigenous culture, or for the myriad of outdoor activities available, you don’t need to stay in squalor. Any one of these beautiful Atitlán hotels is sure to enhance any stay at the world’s most beautiful lake. (https://www.centralamerica.com/experiencing/travel/top-ten-lake-atitlan-hotels/)
