Jose Mourinho appears to have taken a slight swipe at his former player Cristiano Ronaldo after going out of his way to declare his Brazilian namesake as the best player to bear the name. Speaking in a new documentary about the life and career of Mourinho’s mentor Bobby Robson, the Manchester United manager recalled the spectacular season Brazilian Ronaldo spent at the Nou Camp under Robson’s stewardship. With Cristiano the only other player staking a claim to be the best Ronaldo, Mourinho appeared to be targeting the Real Madrid star when he broke mid-sentence to underline his opinion that the Brazilian was the superior player. After spending a significant £13.2million to sign Ronaldo from PSV Eindhoven in 1996, the striker repaid Robson’s faith with 47 goals in his one and only season at the Nou Camp. He would go on to star for Inter Milan and Real Madrid as well as inspire a World Cup win for Brazil in 2002, but Mourinho believes Ronaldo reached his peak under the English manager.
