CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying Championship relocated from Haiti. The Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) withdrew from Haiti the headquarters of the Women’s Olympic Qualifying Championship ahead of Tokyo 2020, as the Haitian Football Federation confirmed this Wednesday. According to the Federation, the decision responds to the country’s current socio-political situation, marked by strong anti-government protests in the last three weeks. The Championship has been relocated to San Juan, Puerto Rico, and according to the Federation, this will ostensibly increase expenses for the Haitian national team. ‘It is the third time in a year that football has suffered the consequences of political turmoil,’ the Federation regretted in a statement. Last year, Haiti was excluded from the U-14 boys qualifying tournament, which was to be held in the country, amid major social upheaval against rising fuel prices. Meanwhile, in July, the first phase of the Men’s Olympic Qualifiers had to be moved to the Cayman Islands given a similar situation. The Haiti national team will face Suriname on Thursday, and play against Puerto Rico on Monday, October 7.
