The Central American Integration System (SICA) launched seven cooperation projects sponsored by Taiwan for two years.
The projects will be implemented in Guatemala and Belize, Taiwan’s Central American diplomatic allies, in public health, climate change, marine environmental protection, small and medium-sized enterprise development, sustainable tourism, energy transition and electric vehicles, digital transformation, and institutional strengthening, CNA reported. The governments of Guatemala and Belize thanked Taiwan for its longtime assistance to SICA in economy, society, environmental protection, climate change, and institutional capacity building, promoting cooperation projects, regional and national development, and enhancing the well-being of their people.
Taiwan Ambassador to Guatemala Miguel Tsao (曹立傑) said Taiwan is an important member of the international community and will work with SICA and regional countries to promote prosperity and development.
Since 1992, Taiwan has cooperated with SICA and became an official observer to the organization in 2002. It has promoted over 120 cooperation projects with SICA.
Aside from SICA, Taiwan is also a member of the Central American Bank for Economic Integration. In August 2023, Taiwan withdrew from the Central American Parliament before the organization could act on an adopted proposal from Nicaragua to eject Taiwan and invite China to take its place.
