The Coordinator of Nueva Corriente (NC) of the Liberal and Refoundation Party (Libre), Carlos Eduardo Reina, on Monday denounced the health crisis in Honduras due to the Government’s incapacity and corruption amid the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

Reina, the NC presidential candidate, described the current situation of the Honduran people as serious, after an increase in the number of coronavirus contagions from 30 to nearly 20,000 in more than 100 days of quarantine and amid the reopening of the economy.

In an interview with Prensa Latina via Whatsapp, the secretary of the People’s Power of Partido Libre criticized the deterioration for decades of the public health system, without the construction of new hospitals over the last few years.

The political leader also criticized the performance of President Juan Orlando Hernandez and the corruption that exists in the context of the crisis, ‘as the emergency purchases of supplies is used to do big businesses, as happened with the acquisition of mobile hospitals at high prices’.

The NC coordinator pointed out that the Government has not implemented correct measures to start the decrease in the curve of contagions by Covid-19 and the population lacks security means.

Reina condemned the Hernandez administration’s lack of responsibility by not complying with providing people with facemasks, antibacterial gel and disinfectants for homes and residential zones.

In that regard, the presidential candidate from Libre noted that poor people in Honduras account for 70% of the country’s population and it is impossible for them to acquire facemasks every day.

He noted that due to the pandemic, working conditions have worsened and half a million Hondurans lost their jobs, ‘mostly violating their rights’.

The politician told Prensa Latina that people continues to stay at home, they can only go out once every two weeks to keep food at home and most people struggle between dying of hunger or due to Covid-19.

Reina admitted that amid the economic, political and social difficulties, the medical personnel in Honduras have shown their best faces in the fight against the pandemic, although it has been an unattended sector for decades.
