The Mexican newspaper La Jornada on Monday condemned racism against China hidden after the Wuhan 2019-nCoV coronavirus outbreak, and described it as a side effect that could be more serious than the disease.
In a substantive article under the title of ‘Racism, the worst epidemic,’ the newspaper considered one of these effects a global economic contraction due to the negative impact of strict and massive measures of sanitary containment, which will have inevitable consequences on China’s development and its exchanges around the globe.
But as another aspect, no less worrying, are the outbreaks of racism and Sinophobia (Anti-Chinese sentiment) that have been presented under the pretext of the epidemic in different nations.
The coronavirus outbreak and expansion gave rise to crazy demands to limit the entry of Chinese citizens to several countries, or to segregate them, and some Western news media have fallen into open racial discrimination acts.
The newspaper said that Sinophobia and Anti-Asian racism in general have been present in the past in many countries, and now they use the coronavirus fear to reactivate and spread. (PL)
