Panamá. By the end of this year, 400 000 irregular migrants will cross the Darien jungle, on the Colombian-Panamanian border, on their way to the United States, authorities estimated today.
The Security Ministry said in a press release that despite the dangers of the jungle and the attacks by criminal gangs, the land route is the most frequented by illegal travelers.
The head of the ministry, Juan Manuel Pino, told the press that the number forecast for 2023 will be a new record and almost double that of 2022, when 248,000 travelers passed through the Darien.
Only until yesterday 226,460 irregular migrants have entered the isthmus through the jungle, mostly Venezuelans, Haitians and Ecuadorians, whose purpose is to reach the northern country, he added.
Pino revealed that in the last 20 days, statistics indicate that an average of 1,100 people enter Panamanian territory daily, and there are even days in which more than 2,300 individuals crossed the border.
