El Salvador began six months on Friday in which the power will presumably pass to Claudia Juana Rodríguez de Guevara, the current president’s private secretary.
The Assembly granted President Nayib Bukele and Vice President Félix Ulloa a leave of absence on Thursday evening to campaign for reelection if they win the February 4, 2024, elections.
As of this Friday, Rodríguez de Guevara will be the first woman to hold the Presidency of El Salvador in the history of this country, where male chauvinism has always been a brake on the rise of women in politics.
An estimated 67 lawmakers voted in favor and 11 against to approve Bukele’s request for leave, whose reelection violates what the Constitution establishes.
Since Bukele’s time as mayor, she has been the private secretary, financial manager of the Presidency, president of the Board of Directors of the National Directorate of Municipal Works (DOM) and was treasurer of the Mayor’s Office of San Salvador, and financial CEO of the Obermet Company, linked to the President, among other crucial posts.
