Honduras’ armed forces reported Sunday the destruction of a clandestine airstrip used by drug trafficking organizations to ship illicit drugs.
The move brought the total number of airstrips dismantled so far this year to 21. A total of 246 secret airstrips have been destroyed since 2014.
The one-km-long and 30-meter-wide airstrip was located in Llanos de Puno in northeastern Honduras, near the border with Nicaragua.
A small aircraft carrying 901 kg of cocaine was recently intercepted in the same area in a military anti-narcotics operation.
Central America’s Caribbean corridor is one of the most frequently used channels to transport drugs from South American production centers to the U.S. market. (http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/2020-08/03/c_139260292.htm)
