The observer mission of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) described the general elections in Suriname as ‘transparent’, after two weeks of work following up on the electoral process of last May 25th.
The group of observers issued a report escribing Suriname’s electoral program as fundamentally robust, with many checks and balances built into the system.
During its stay in the country, the regional mission exchanged with the political parties involved, the Anti-Fraud Platform, the local group of electoral observers from the private sector and the Inter-religious Council.
Likewise, the CARICOM representatives recognized the active participation of political parties at each stage of the electoral process in order to examine the procedures.
Finally, it congratulated the people of Suriname on the way it behaved to express its democratic rights, especially amid the threat of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The preliminary unofficial tally of votes reached 99.4 percent of the poll’s declarations, without any political party having achieved a two-thirds majority, although the results of the Paramaribo constituency have yet to be processed.
According to DWTonline, the Progressive Reform Party unofficially surpassed the ruling National Democratic Party in the elections, pending the final declaration of the Independent Electoral Bureau, which should be ready this week, thus meeting the maximum term of 10 days. (PL)
