Cuba and Norway, guarantors of the negotiations between the Colombian State and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-People’s Army (FARC-EP), ratified their commitment to peace in that South American country
Through a statement, released in Havana by the Cuban Foreign Ministry, the two countries expressed deep concern about the resumption of the armed struggle by a FARC-EP faction.
The guarantors ‘support all those who defend the peace process in Colombia and confirm the validity of the historic Final Peace Agreement and consider that its effective implementation and strict compliance is the way to preserve peace,’ says the document.
In this context, protecting the Special Jurisdiction for Peace, which was designed and agreed upon with the prioritized objective of guaranteeing truth, justice, reparation and non-repetition, is particularly relevant.
They also consider with similar relevance the issues related to the agrarian reform, the replacement of illegal crops, security and the full reintegration and reinstatement of former FARC-EP combatants into the civilian life, in the interest of consolidating the peace process.
The guarantors reiterated their willingness to continue supporting and accompanying the efforts to achieve a stable and lasting peace in Colombia, the statement concluded.
On Thursday, August 29, some FARC-EP members announced the beginning of a new stage of struggle in response to ‘the Colombian State’s betrayal of the 2016 Peace Agreement.’ (PL)
