Eusebio Leal Spengler, the Iconic Historian of the City of Havana, who oversaw the transformation of crumbling Old Havana to an immaculately restored colonial tourist attraction, becoming the de-facto mayor of the historic city center and one of the nation’s most prominent public intellectuals, has died. He was 77. Early on Friday July 31st, Eusebio Leal Spengler died victim of a painful illness. Details about the organization of funerals will be informed to the Cuban people. Leal Spengler was born in Havana City on September 11, 1942. He was a Doctor of Historical Sciences at the University of Havana, Master in Studies on Latin America, the Caribbean and Cuba, specializing in Archaeological Sciences. He studied at the University of Havana 1975 with a Bachelor of History degree. He has studied post-graduate studies in Italy on the restoration of Historic Centers by scholarship granted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Italian Republic. He was a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba from the Fourth Congress, Deputy to the National Assembly of Popular Power in IV-1993, V-1998, VI-2003, VII-2008, VIII-2013 and IX –2018 Legislatures, Goodwill Ambassador of the United Nations.
