The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) will launch on Thursday, August 1, at 11:00 Chile time (UTC/GMT-4), its annual report Foreign Direct Investment in Latin America and the Caribbean 2024, which offers a complete overview of the evolution of these flows at a global, regional and national level. This year the publication also proposes a series of guidelines to increase this type of investment at a national and subnational scale, as well as to increase its impact in terms of productive transformation.
The main conclusions of the document will be announced by José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, Executive Secretary of ECLAC, in a hybrid press conference (in-person and virtual) held from the headquarters of the United Nations regional organization in Santiago, Chile.
As is traditional, the first chapter of the study details the amounts of foreign direct investment (FDI) received by each country and subregion in 2023, and examines the main trends observed in relation to these flows. The behavior of Latin American transnational companies, known as translatinas, is also addressed.
The second chapter analyzes the policies to attract foreign direct investment implemented in Latin America and the Caribbean and other regions of the world, and 17 guidelines are proposed to increase this investment and its positive effects on the economies, considering that FDI is called to play a leading role in the productive development policies of Latin American and Caribbean countries.
Finally, the third chapter examines the trends, determinants, policies and guidelines of foreign direct investment at the subnational level, based on case studies from the region. Various recommendations are included to maximize the benefits derived from this source of resources in the different territories within the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean.
Journalists are invited to attend the ECLAC headquarters in Santiago, Chile to participate in the press conference in person.
