Punta Cana, San Juan, and Tulum are among the top travel choices for North American tourists between June and September 2025, according to the Mastercard Economic Institute’s Travel Report 2025. Punta Cana ranks 4th among the 15 most visited destinations by U.S. and Canadian travelers, showing a 0.12% increase over the same period in 2024. San Juan rose by 0.2%, reinforcing Puerto Rico’s popularity, while Tulum came in at 12th globally, with a 0.08% increase.
In Latin America, Brazil leads the list with six cities among the top regional destinations. Rio de Janeiro saw the highest growth at +1.28%, followed by Iguazú, Recife, Florianópolis, Salvador, and Natal. Mexico also stood out, with Cancún ranking second in the region (+0.71%), followed by Cozumel and Mexico City. Punta Cana, with a 0.19% increase, maintains strong appeal among Latin American tourists as well.
Gastronomic tourism continues to thrive, particularly in Cartagena, Colombia, which welcomed diners from 43 countries in 2024. Other culinary hotspots include Quepos, Costa Rica, known for its fresh seafood, and Cancún, with a mix of traditional and international flavors.
Sports tourism also had a major economic impact. The World Series in Los Angeles saw Japanese tourist spending jump 91%, driven by star player Shohei Ohtani, while Dominican tourist spending rose in New York, influenced by Juan Soto. Similarly, the Copa Libertadores final in Argentina spurred a spending surge among Brazilian tourists, surpassing other international visitors.
