With the support of 187 of its member states, the UN General Assembly adopted on Thursday a new resolution calling for an end to the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba.
There were two abstentions: Colombia and Ukraine; and only Israel and Brazil voted alongside the US against the lifting of the blockade, becoming isolated amid the demand of the majority of the international community.
For the twenty-eighth consecutive occasion since 1992, the countries of the world categorically rejected the blockade imposed by Washington against the island for almost six decades in the main deliberative body of the United Nations.
More than 40 nations and international organizations such as the Non-Aligned Movement and the Group of 77 plus China spoke out against the policy and called for it to be lifted.
Diplomats and senior representatives from different countries condemned the increased hostility and unilateral coercive measures imposed by the United States against Cuba.
In their interventions, they denounced once and again the extraterritorial nature of the blockade.
Likewise, they stressed that the US blockade is the main obstacle to Cuba’s sustainable development and is a violation of Cubans’ human rights.
Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel highlighted on Thursday the majority support of the international community for an end to the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States against the island for almost six decades.
‘The blockade is real and we will defeat it with the support of the international community that today overwhelmingly voted for Cuba against the blockade. Servile governments show where their affinities lie. And they are alone along with the empire,’ Diaz-Canel wrote on his Twitter account.
‘Voting against Cuba is voting for the continuity of the genocide,’ the head of state stressed.
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez expressed gratitude today to the vast majority of the international community for their support to Cuba’s battle against the blockade that the United States has imposed for almost six decades.
Rodriguez expressed gratitude on his Twitter account, a day after 187 countries voted in favor of the resolution entitled, ‘Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States against Cuba,’ which was approved by the United Nations General Assembly.
‘We recognize with deep gratitude all those who have expressed their rejection of the blockade against Cuba and those who have always accompanied us in our incessant struggle for the end of this policy,’ Rodriguez posted.
For his part, Cuban Minister of Economy and Planning Alejandro Gil said that ‘USA and its lackeys are totally isolated, because of their gross and criminal’ policy against the island.
‘They cannot defeat us. We will overcome the blockade and all the measures imposed on us. The peoples of the world know on which side is the truth,’ he tweeted.
The vote marked the twenty-eighth consecutive occasion since 1992 on which the majority of the world’s nations demanded in the main deliberative body of the United Nations an end to the genocidal US policy. (PL)
