More than 20 routes to warmer destinations will begin for winter-weary travelers this December.

Fort Worth-based American Airlines is already preparing for the winter travel season with the announcement of its flight schedule for travel to Mexico, the Caribbean, and Latin America. The schedule is set to be the carrier’s most extensive Latin America and Caribbean operation in history, growing its capacity by 10%.

The airline is also introducing new routes from Nashville, Tennessee, and Cincinnati, Ohio, and plans to increase frequencies on 21 existing routes. American is already the largest airline between the US and the Caribbean and Latin America.

Strengthening the lead

José A. Freig, American Airlines Vice President of Operations and Commercial for Mexico, the Caribbean, and Latin America, said the announcement solidifies the carrier’s lead in the region.

The airline, a member of the oneworld Alliance, will operate more than 2,250 flights weekly this winter, serving 90 destinations in the region, representing a seat capacity increase of 10% compared to winter 2022.

On December 5th, American will expand frequencies on 10 routes from its hub at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT). With flights operating throughout the winter season, the airline said passengers will have more options to choose from. Service to Belize (BZE), Curaçao (CUR), Liberia (LIR), Los Cabos (SJD), Puerto Plata (POP), and St. Croix (STX) will expand to daily service. Montego Bay (MBJ), Punta Canta (PUJ), and San Juan (SJU) service will grow to four daily flights, and service to Cancun (CUN) will have five scheduled departures daily. The increase represents 40% more seats available from CLT to Mexico, the Caribbean, and Latin America compared to last year.

More ways to Mexico

New nonstop service will launch to Cancun from Nashville and Cincinnati on December 9th. The routes from both cities will operate on Saturdays through March 2024. The service adds to American’s more than 35 peak-day flights to Cancun, including a second daily flight that will originate from Austin, Texas, beginning November 5th. Service will also be increased from the carrier’s largest hub at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW). Seven destinations will see flight frequencies increase, contributing to more than 50 daily departures to Mexico from DFW:

  • Service to Acapulco (ACA) will increase to three weekly flights
  • Huatulco (HUX) flights will expand to four weekly flights
  • Flights to Puerto Vallarta (PVR) will increase to four daily flights
  • Monterrey (MTY) and Los Cabos (SJD) service will increase to five daily flights
  • Service to Zacatecas (ZCL) and Zihuatanejo (ZIH) will expand to daily service

Warm winter regions

Miami International Airport (MIA), American’s southeastern hub and gateway to Latin America and the Caribbean, will also have more departures this winter. Service to Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago (POS), Santiago, Dominican Republic (SIT), and Tortola, British Virgin Islands (EIS), will be increased to two daily flights.

“With more than 140 daily departures to 70 destinations, American offers an industry-leading schedule and destination variety for travelers to explore all that the region offers,” the airline said.

American’s flight schedule announcement comes as many travelers are already making plans for this winter. Low-cost carrier Southwest Airlines updated its flight schedule last week, extending flights available for purchase through early next year.
