Government officials in Ecuador announced a revised entry fee structure for the Galápagos Islands, starting on August 1.

According to Galápagos National Park Authority’s Arturo Izurieta and Tourism Minister Niels Olsen, the new fee system represents Ecuador’s commitment to protecting the islands’ ecosystem, ensuring their preservation for future generations.

The increased entry fee is the first in over 25 years and will be used to formulate sustainable tourism practices within the archipelago. The Galapagos National Park understands the importance of travelers to the local economy but is also focused on preserving the island’s delicate ecosystem.

While residents of Ecuador and the surrounding South American countries will pay a discounted rate, most tourists heading to the Galápagos Islands will spend $200 per person. Children 12 years and younger will pay $100 per person, while foreign students enrolled in Ecuadorian institutes will only spend $50.

“The Galápagos Islands are not only a national treasure but a global one,” Olsen said. “It is our collective responsibility to protect and preserve this unparalleled ecosystem for future generations.”

“The adjustment in the entry fee, the first in 26 years, is a necessary measure to ensure that tourism in the Galápagos remains sustainable and mutually beneficial to both the environment and our local communities,” Olsen continued.

Officials said the funds would be directly channeled into conservation initiatives, infrastructural upgrades, and community programs to mitigate tourism’s ecological footprint on the islands, including critical areas such as sewage systems, waste management, and medical infrastructure.

Visitors to the Galápagos Islands can anticipate enhanced conservation efforts, upgraded facilities, and educational programs to cultivate a deeper understanding and appreciation of the island’s natural heritage.
