No matter your personal circumstance, it’s likely that you’ve begun counting down to the new year.

With the promise of a coronavirus vaccine, the Government last month said that the year of 2021 will mark the rebirth of Mexico. Next year, the Government said, will see travel activity return and the celebration once again of Mexican cuisine.

We all hope for the same, of course, and it seems we may not have to wait that long. True to the last-minute bookings that have dominated hotel booking trends this year, SiteMinder’s World Hotel Index shows that, over the coming year, hotel guest arrivals in Mexico are highest over the coming Christmas and New Year’s Eve period. The same is true in several European countries, including Spain, Germany and France. It’s also true in Canada and in countries as far-reaching as South Africa and Morocco, not to mention throughout the Asia Pacific.

Clearly, many of us can’t think of a better way to close this year than by being with our loved ones, in a destination that looks anything unlike the confines of our home. Indeed, of all bookings made with a Mexican hotel in the last two weeks, more than half (50.64 percent) are for stays during the final weeks of the year.

SiteMinder’s World Hotel Index reveals a fluctuating but steady recovery for Mexico’s accommodation industry, as the country surpasses almost 80 percent of its 2019 booking levels. Already this year, hotel bookings within Playa del Carmen have reached over 117 percent of last year’s volumes to exceed pre-pandemic levels.

Does this data indicate newfound traveler confidence, following the news of an impending vaccine? Perhaps.

I believe, however, that the data suggests much more.

It’s about reconnecting

In a recent report titled From Booming to Privilege: The New Realities for a Hotel Industry in Need of a Reset, SiteMinder’s managing director, Mike Ford, described the world today as “foreign” and argued that, contrary to what many believed, the world had become “simpler than it’s ever been”. Said Mike: “We’re being asked to reconnect with ourselves and our families, with nature, and with the simple things in life… We’re being reminded that we’re travelling by merely existing, but we have the chance to seek out extraordinary moments in time – not with strangers, but with ourselves and those we truly care about.”

For many, Christmas represents a time for reconnecting. And, this year, beyond the Posadas, traditional celebrations and amazing meals throughout Mexico, Christmas represents an opportunity to farewell the year it’s been and to welcome whatever 2021 may bring.

As part of the renewed traveler confidence in Mexico, trip durations are already displaying signs of growth. Over the March to June period of 2021, SiteMinder data shows that the average length of stay at a Mexican hotel will be 3.8 days versus the average 2.8 days seen during the same period this year.

This year, Christmas stands as a chance to experience something that doesn’t at all feel “foreign”. It’s a chance to experience a sense of normalcy within an environment that is anything but what we all know to be normal. It’s a chance to part with our digital screens and to embrace the world around us once more.

Whether 2021 will go down as the year of Mexico’s rebirth remains to be seen, but what we know for sure is that, with or without the promise of a vaccine, this Christmas will be one we will all cherish and remember. (https://www.hospitalitynet.org/opinion/4102155.html)
