International Meeting of Solidarity Being Held in Cuba

Coming to Cuba in these times is a test of courage and political commitment, said Ulises Guilarte, secretary general of the Central Workers Union of Cuba (CTC), at the inauguration of the traditional International Solidarity Encounter.

In the Conventions Palace of this capital, the venue of the forum, Guilarte thanked the more than one thousand activists from Latin America, Europe, Africa, Asia and the United States for their presence, as several of them violated the laws of the blockade in order to reach the Caribbean nation.

The union leader highlighted the interferences actions of the United States Government and the intensification of the economic, commercial and financial blockade against the largest of the Antilles, with the enforcement this Thursday of Title III of the Helms-Burton Act.

He also stressed the importance of maintaining and defending ‘our social projects and not bend to the orders of the empire’.

During the meeting, which this year is projected against war and for world peace, the secretary general of the CTC also highlighted the invariable solidarity with Venezuela, while demanding the freedom of former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

For his part, the Venezuelan ambassador in Havana, Adan Chavez, affirmed that in spite of the interfering actions of the Washington government against Bolivar’s homeland, the Venezuelan people have resisted and will continue to resist.

Fernando Gonzalez, president of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with Peoples (ICAP), stressed that solidarity activists are social actors in action and added that he counts on friends on the island under the current circumstances.

Gonzalez also invited those present at the Hemispheric Anti-imperialist Meeting of Solidarity, for Democracy and against Neoliberalism, to take place next November in this capital, which is called solidarity movements, trade unionists, youth, students, as well as all sectors committed to preventing the advance of the right in the region.

The attendees to the forum pronounce themselves on diverse problems that several of their nations live, at the same time that they thank the solidarity of the Caribbean island with countries of the region and the world.

Most delegates to the one-day meeting – traditionally held after International Workers Day – participated the day before in the May 1 parade, which gathered nearly a million people in Havana’s Revolution Square Jose Marti, according to estimates.
