Guatemala to Hand over SICA Pro Tempore Presidency to El Salvador
Guatemala is handing over the pro tempore presidency of the Central American Integration System (SICA) to El Salvador on Wednesday, as a coda of a summit of heads of States in this capital.
The meeting’s agenda focuses on issues of common interest such as peace, democracy, security, economic and social integration, climate change and the migration crisis, after threats by the Government of the United States against Central America’s North Triangle for not containing the current exodus.
On Tuesday, the 77th meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministries was held to discuss integration as a key weapon to meet the challenges of globalization.
Salvadorian President Nayib Bukele will receive the commitment to lead the organization in the next six months from his Guatemalan counterpart, Jimmy Morales.
Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama were the founding countries of SICA on December 13, 1991.
Later, the organization welcomed Belize in 2000 and the Dominican Republic in 2013.
SICA has a group of Regional and Extra-regional Observers. (PL)
