Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry announced he intends to work with the Provisional Electoral Council and civil society organizations to carry out an intense media campaign for the upcoming elections.

The 74-year-old neurosurgeon took office on Friday as head of the Ministry of Culture and Communication, as part of the cabinet reshuffle, the result of negotiations with political forces.

Henry pointed out that the purpose is to achieve a high turnout in the elections to elect the president, parliamentarians and local governors, in addition to the referendum to adopt the new Constitution, although the process is still premature.

In recent years, abstentionism marked the country’s electoral processes, with consequent allegations of fraud.

The assassinated President Jovenel Moïse acceded to power in 2017 with about 20 percent of the electoral roll attending the polls.

The prime minister pledged to develop a dynamic and coherent communication policy, based on traditional and social media to inform the population of the administration’s achievements.

Last Wednesday, Henry reformed the executive to fulfill one of the points of the September 11 agreement, which was supported by hundreds of political and social organizations.

Eight new ministers from the opposition and civil society joined the government, the second one the neurosurgeon formed in little more than four months. (https://www.plenglish.com/news/2021/11/27/haitian-govt-wants-to-attract-voters-with-media-campaign/)
