Belize: Government Signs Agreement for The Implementation of Good Governance Legislation
The Government of Belize made a decisive move in the implementation of good governance legislation today by signing an agreement with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
Attorney General, Magali Marin Young signed the agreement which will see the UNDP financing the hiring of an international expert to assist the Attorney General’s Ministry with the development of a Civil Asset Recovery and Unexplained Wealth Order legal framework, including primary and subsidiary laws.
“This is in keeping with the government’s commitment to fulfilling the obligations under the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC),” GOB said.
Good governance legislation has been a major point of contention for successive government administrations, being a stated reason for strikes held by the Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) and Public Service Union (PSU) in 2016 under the Barrow administration, as well as earlier this year under the Briceño administration.
