Costa Rica. Following Costa Rica’s designation as the pro tempore president of ECLAC during the thirty-eighth session of the body, the country has as its mission joining forces to overcome the regional crisis caused by Covid-19.

At the closing of the online meeting, in which Costa Rica received from Cuba the presidency of ECLAC for the next two years, the Foreign Minister of Costa Rica, Rodolfo Solano, affirmed on Wednesday that multilateralism, solidarity and cooperation are essential to overcome the crisis caused by Covid-19. ‘Our countries, our economies, must write a new script for their development based on regional and international cooperation, and within the framework of an effective and supportive multilateralism,’ he said.

He stressed that the three-day session showed that transformation accompanied by innovation is the common thread that should guide the development of the region, as well as is the foundation of the four pillars of their presidency.

The Session is the most important meeting of ECLAC -made up of 46 member states and 14 associated states- as it guides the work and activities of the organization for the next two years.

When informing that Costa Rica would assume the pro-tempore presidency of the regional body, local authorities stated that the pillars of national management will be regional political coordination and cooperation.

They also mentioned cooperation with international financial institutions, support for the United Nations System, and safeguarding international law and human rights, all focused on regional reconstruction in the post-pandemic era.

In one of his speeches at the meeting, the president of Costa Rica, Carlos Alvarado, assured that ‘Latin America and the Caribbean cannot tolerate losing another decade.’
