Cuba’s alternate permanent representative to the UN, Ana Silvia Rodriguez, rejected on Friday US ongoing unilateral coercive measures to tighten the blockade against Cuba in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Washington blacklisted a Cuban bank headquartered in the United Kingdom and blocked its assets, noted Rodriguez on Twitter.
The US has been attempting to render the Cuban people out of hunger and despair by taking those kinds of actions, but the White House will not succeed, the ambassador pointed out.
On Thursday, US authorities ratified sanctions against Havin Bank, the only entity established exclusively with Cuban capital and whose headquarters are in London.
The website of the US Department of Treasury announced such news, specifying that the agency is included in the list of special designations of the Office of Foreign Assets Control.
Havin Bank has been operating since August 1973 and its main shareholder is Banco Central de Cuba (Cuban Central Bank). With a privileged location in London, the bank has a network of 400 correspondents worldwide.
This recent measure joins others, such as bans on the travel of US citizens and the entry of cruisers to Cuba, as well as sanctions against shipping companies that transport oil to Cuba.
