The Caribbean Community (CARICOM), represented by its President and Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Timothy Harris, will be attending the International Conference starting Thursday in Montevideo, Uruguay, focused on the political upheaval in Venezuela.
Such a meeting aims to establish the bases for a new mechanism of dialogue involving all forces, to help re-establish peace in Venezuela’, says the joint declaration by Mexico, Uruguay and CARICOM.
In this regard, Harris affirmed having a hopeful vision for the Venezuelan people.
‘We want them to enjoy the same peace we do, to have the same capacity to participate in the international market, the same challenges… That they have our same aspirations, but the most important thing is they have to want it for themselves’, Harris added.
The trip of the CARICOM mission to Montevideo is in line with its United Nations liaison diplomacy to encourage dialogue and negotiations for the benefit of the Venezuelan people.
Prior to Thursday’s meeting, Prime Ministers Harris of St. Kitts and Nevis; Kieth Rowley of Trinidad and Tobago; and Mia Mottley of Barbados met with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, who accepted the leaders’ invitation to offer their services to the Venezuelan people.
